Ear Candling
Ear candling or “coning” dates back to ancient times, and oral tradition reports its ability to remove debris and obstructions such an excess ear wax from the ear canal. Though not scientifically tested for effect, patients often request ear candling in cases of chronic sinusitis, allergies, hearing loss due to obstruction of ear wax and for those who have symptoms after swimming or air travel.

What you can expect to feel?
Your practitioner will have you lie comfortably on your side with your head supported by pillows. An ear candle will be placed in your ear at a 45 degree angle to avoid any contact with your eardrum and to create a vacuum seal. Next, the far end of the ear candle is lit and your practitioner may adjust the ear candle’s position for your comfort and for optimal function. This process will not feel hot to your ear at any time. All you are expected to do is relax and enjoy the experience. Once the first candle has burned down to approximately 6 inches, it will be removed and you will be asked to roll onto your other side, so that the same process can be performed on your other ear.

Patients remark that after both ears have been candled, they feel clearer, have less congestion and are very relaxed from the time they have spent resting during the session. Experiences vary from individual to individual.

How many times should I have ear candling done?
Usually 3 sessions, separated by 3- 7 days in between. This is not a rule and certainly you should see how you feel after your first session and discuss your options with your practitioner, so you can make the best decision.

What are the candle ingredients?
100% unbleached cotton or linen and beeswax. Sometimes specific candles may come scented by aromatherapy oil essence.

What are the risks?
As with any procedure, if done improperly you can sustain injuries to your eardrum and surrounding areas. This is why you should NEVER candle yourself and you should go to a practitioner who is skilled in the procedure. Ear candling should NOT be used in cases of perforated eardrum, ear tubes or where there is an ear infection present or suspected.

Are ear candles FDA approved?
No, they have not been FDA approved. You should NOT use ear candles without first consulting your medical doctor about the symptoms you may be experiencing to rule out more serious issues like ear infection or perforated ear drum. There is no medical evidence to prove that ear candles remove ear wax and debris. Ear candles are a home remedy and have been used for many years in many cultures.
